Diabetes is a progressive and complicated disease that causes people to disengage in the management of their health. As the condition worsens, patients may feel guilt and become less willing to openly talk to a healthcare provider about their struggle with the disease. There was a need for a more personal solution, one tailored to each individual and designed to help them understand what can be done differently through small shifts in behavior.
There was an opportunity to create and design a unique experience and solution, outside of a traditional medical device, that would help patients feel more comfortable using a technology-based support system to manage their disease (and health) with a sense of ease and optimism. The name ”Bonli” was created to capture that experience, derived from the meaning of “good” in French, ”bon” and ”li” for life, together expressing a larger purpose of “Living well with diabetes.”
The imagery and illustration reflect actual people shown in everyday moments to highlight this solution’s individualized nature — the “Aha moments” of realization that come with ease. In particular, the illustration represented an opportunity to reflect a personal and non-pharma/traditional depiction of people with this condition. Given that certified diabetes educators are a part of the solution and the main differentiator from competitive solutions, imagery represented an opportunity to highlight this vital feature of service.
A unique color palette creates a sense of calm and approachability, while small hits of vibrant color evoke a sense of optimism. Graphic shapes and patterns add a note of personalization and storytelling. Together, the visual elements create a clear and engaging user experience — helping each individual navigate seamlessly through their journey.
A mobile app was developed to offer a convenient way for people to interact with a diabetes expert or a community of people with diabetes. Research showed for people to willingly engage with and continue to use a digital platform regularly, they need to feel comfortable providing details about their personal lifestyle choices.
As part of the solution, a Welcome Kit was sent to patients enrolled in the Bonli Health Management Solution. Within the kit are three to four components selected and based upon the individual’s goal. Features may include a glucose monitoring device, t-shirt, recipe cards or activity cards, a sleep mask, or FitBit, just to name a few.
The initiative has helped transform a passive, non-specific interaction that relies on a person’s motivation to change their lifestyle to a trusted, personal experience designed to inspire and motivate small, healthy changes — leading to better clinical and beneficial health outcomes.
